1st Ashtead Brownies added a big splash of colour to their summer activities, celebrating the Hindu Festival of Holi in their local park.
“Holi” is known at the Festival of Colours and involves family and friends gathering together to playfully throw colourful paint and bright powders at each other and into the air, fully immersing themselves from head to toe in colour. Beyond the joyous throwing of Holi colours, the festival marks the arrival of spring (traditionally celebrated in March/April) and celebrates the victory of good over evil.

1st Ashtead Brownies Brown Owl Sarita Armin said “With the summer term bringing longer days and warmer weather, it was a good opportunity to introduce the festival of colours to my Brownie unit. We decided to have our meeting in our local park, so that we had the freedom of space and didn’t have to worry about cleaning up afterwards! I arranged a structured game to ensure everyone could get involved in smearing colour on each other. Initially there was some reluctance from some girls as it was new to them, but we always allow girls to make their own decision about getting involved in an activity. Once they saw other girls enjoying themselves, they joined in. Everyone was having fun and soon we were all covered in different colours from head to toe. It definitely took much longer to wash off the colour than it did to smear on each other!”
