2nd Leatherhead Brownies, which has been running for more than 62 years, is looking for new leaders to take over the unit.

Current leader Wendy Amer is retiring from May half term after an incredible 16 years’ service.

However, until a new leader – or potentially leaders – are found, the unit remains at risk of closure. 16 Brownies are currently registered with 2nd Leatherhead, enjoying a wide variety of activities at weekly meetings.

Local leaders and Brownies recently gathered at the Swan Centre to tell people in Leatherhead about the unit and to encourage them to help save it.

Katie Garland, District Commissioner for Fetcham and Leatherhead, said:-

“This is a wonderful unit and after sixty two years, we really want to do everything we can to keep the group going. However, the unit will close if we don’t recruit leaders and there aren’t enough spaces in other units locally to accommodate all the existing girls.

You will be given full training and the leader role can easily be shared amongst 3-5 adults, at least two of whom should work towards a leadership qualification. The more adults in the role, the more the work is shared out and will give the flexibility to not attend every week.

Becoming a Brownie leader is a very rewarding role, the girls grow up enormously in their time with you and are at an age that they start to become the girl they will be as teenagers/young adults! The adults in the district team are fun and sociable, they are very supportive of new leaders and helping them get their leadership qualifications and gain confidence as leaders.”
