Seventeen Guides and five adult volunteer leaders from Bookham and Effingham District headed to Windsor Great Park in July for an unforgettable week of adventure, friendship and new experiences at the WINGS International Jamboree.

WINGS brought together a total of around 4,000 young people aged 10–18, supported by more than 1,000 adult volunteers, with participants travelling from across the UK and overseas. The week-long event was all about fun, adventure, learning new skills and making friends.

Bookham and Effingham Guides stayed on a sub-camp with a Medieval Britain theme, providing a home base where they could relax, eat and meet other groups. Each activity session saw participants visit a different themed “Guild” – our local Guides took on climbing, boating, cooking, wheeling, crafting, caving, performing, splashing and sweet making.

WINGS’ Guilds were designed to encourage those attending to try something new, develop practical skills, work together and build confidence. The Guides also headed into Windsor town to explore and discover more of the local area.

Evenings were just as busy, with live entertainment, badge swapping and plenty of opportunities to meet Guides and Scouts from both the UK and abroad.

WINGS is a wonderful example of the opportunities available through Girlguiding – its  programme is designed to help girls learn about themselves, find their voice, gain skills and confidence, and discover that they can do anything.
